How an order is priced

You buy tests in your myASE account, and each checkout is one order:

  • Registration: $34 per order, however many tests the order holds. Two tests in one order pay it once; two tests bought a week apart pay it twice.
  • Test fee: $62 for each A, G1 or T test, $124 for each Advanced Level test (L1–L4).
  • Example: $96 for one test alone in an order ($62 + $34); each extra test in the same order adds $62.
  • Sales tax: added on top in 37 states, among them CA, FL, NY and TX; the full list is on the registration page (checked Oct 23, 2026).
  • Whole Master sets: all eight A1–A8 tests in one order come to $530; the seven Master truck tests T2–T8, $468. Both are before tax.

The order also starts a clock: 90 days from purchase to schedule and take the test; no changes within 3 days of the appointment. If you can't sit a test, cancel it before the window runs out: untaken, unexpired tests canceled within 90 days of purchase are refunded. An expired test and a missed appointment (a no-show) both forfeit the fees, per the FAQ on ase.com.

What a retake costs

A failed test is bought again from scratch. The wait is 30 full days before you can buy and schedule the same test again, and the new purchase is a new order, so it carries the registration fee again: $96 for an A, G1 or T test bought on its own. Adding the retake to an order with your next new test saves one registration fee.

There is no published passing score, and ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed, so use your detailed score report and the task list in the study guide to decide what to restudy.

Recertification and the Renewal App

Each certification lasts 5 years. To keep it you pay again in one of two ways:

  • By test: $62 per recertification test; test fees are capped at $186 an order, so $220 at most with registration. The cap is what makes recertifying several tests at once cheap: recertifying the seven Master truck tests in one order costs $220. Advanced Level recertification is $124 a test under the same cap.
  • ASE Renewal App (A1–A9 only): $52 a year covers all your A1–A9 certifications; 8 correct answers in an area add 1 year. One subscription covers every A-series certification you hold, so it gets cheaper per certification the more you have. It doesn't cover G1, the T tests or the L tests.

Over one five-year cycle the app costs $260, while a single capped order that recertifies all your A tests at once costs at most $220. The app saves the trip and the test; the order saves money. The full comparison is on recertification.

A per-test price is not the whole bill

A figure like “$62 per test” leaves out the $34 registration fee, and that fee comes back with every retake and every new order. In 37 states sales tax comes on top as well. Budget with your real order: its test fees, one registration fee and your state's tax.

Costs around the test

  • Study guides: ASE's own study guides are free PDFs on ase.com. See the study guide page.
  • Official practice tests: 25 questions for A1, 60 days to finish, no price shown on ASE's page.
  • Duplicate certificate: $7.50 per test series, per the FAQ on ase.com (checked Oct 23, 2026).
  • Remote testing: G1 is the only ASE test you can take remotely the first time; register at least 4 days ahead. That saves the trip to a test center; every other first attempt is at a Prometric center.
