ASE G1 requirements and test rules
To hold G1 you need two things: a pass on the test and 1 year of full-time hands-on work (or the part-time equivalent). The order is up to you: you can test first; the certificate waits until the experience is approved. Everything else below, from the question count to the retake wait, is taken from the 2026 G1 study guide, the Need to Know booklet (January 2026) and ase.com pages, each row with its source.

Work experience
Required: 1 year, full-time or the part-time equivalent; the full rule is in the table above.
Training that counts. An ASE-accredited program counts as 6 months, an OEM co-op program as 1 year, 3+ ASE entry-level tests as 6 months; substitutes cannot be combined. The rules are on ASE's work experience form, which you fill in through myASE.
Format
- 65 questions in all: 55 scored questions plus 10 unscored research questions, not marked.
- 90 minutes for the whole test.
- All multiple choice. The guide's samples include Technician A/B, EXCEPT and picture-based questions (guide, pp. 9–10).
The guide contradicts itself: it prints "45 scored" on p.3 and a total of 50 on p.4, but its own area counts add up to 55. The ase.com G1 page agrees with the area sum.
Passing score
Not published by ASE. ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed. You get pass or fail. Figures like "70%" that circulate online come from ASE's entry-level student tests, not from professional tests such as G1.
Results
Score report emailed when you finish the test. myASE shows results later: within 24 hours in most cases (FAQ); the Need to Know guide says within 5 days. A pass on the test is half the requirement; the certificate is issued once your work experience is on file.
Retakes
Wait 30 full days before you can buy and schedule the same test again. A retake is a new purchase, so it's a new order with its own fees: G1 cost.
Testing from home
Test center or remote proctoring at home or work (Prometric ProProctor), first attempt included. G1 is the only ASE test you can take remotely the first time; register at least 4 days ahead. You need a computer that passes Prometric's system readiness test and a secure room to test in (Need to Know, p. 4).
Late arrivals, in person or online, can be turned away and lose the fee (same booklet, p. 3).
Spanish version
Each question can show two languages at once: English with a side-by-side Spanish version and a pop-up glossary. The Spanish view sits beside the English text on the same screen, so you can switch between them question by question.
Booking
- Buy the test in a registration window: 2026: Jan 10–Mar 31 · Apr 10–Jun 30 · Jul 10–Sep 30 · Oct 10–Dec 31.
- Book and take it within the window you get: 90 days from purchase to schedule and take the test; no changes within 3 days of the appointment.
- Refunds: untaken, unexpired tests canceled within 90 days of purchase are refunded.
Fees as of October 23, 2026: $96 for one test alone in an order ($62 + $34); each extra test in the same order adds $62. The breakdown is on G1 cost.
Recertification
G1 is valid for 5 years, then a recertification test: a recertification resets the expiry to five years from the recert date. The recertification test, G1R, is 28 questions, 45 minutes: no research questions; open only to those who passed G1 once.
- How: test center or remote proctoring (Prometric ProProctor); no Renewal App. The app covers A1–A9 only, so your A-series certifications can use it; G1 can't.

Yes: you can test first; the certificate waits until the experience is approved.
