Work experience

Training can replace part of the 2 years, or all of it: An ASE-accredited program counts as 1 year, an OEM co-op program up to 2 years, 3+ ASE entry-level tests as 1 year, other training up to 1 year; substitutes cannot be combined. You claim a substitute on the work experience form.

Test format

Each T test has 40–55 scored questions and 60–90 min of testing time, depending on the test. Another 10 are unscored research items, mixed in without a mark.

The overview has the table for each test, and each test page lists its content areas, for example T4 Brakes.

Registration and scheduling

Tests are sold in four registration windows a year; the current one: Oct 10–Dec 31 (fall 2026). Once you buy, you have 90 days to schedule and sit each test. Refunds: untaken, unexpired tests canceled within 90 days of purchase are refunded.

Where you test

A first attempt is taken at a Prometric test center in the US and Canada. Remote proctoring opens up only for recertification.

Scoring and results

The passing score is not published, and the report does not list the questions you missed. The pass marks that circulate online, "70%" or "50–60%", come from ASE's entry-level student tests, not from the professional T tests.

Your score report is emailed at once, and the copy in myASE follows later; the table above gives both timings ASE publishes.

Retakes

Wait 30 days, then buy the test again: as of October 2026 that is $96 on its own, or $62 added to a larger order.

Recertification

Each T certification runs 5 years; a recertification resets the expiry to five years from the recert date.

  • Recert test: shorter, 20–28 questions depending on the test.
  • Where: center or remote, through Prometric ProProctor for remote.
  • Renewal App: not for T tests.
  • Fee, as of October 2026: $62 per recertification test; test fees are capped at $186 an order, so $220 at most with registration. The cost page works out the Master truck case.

Language

The T tests are in English with a pop-up English–Spanish glossary for terms; there is no side-by-side Spanish version.

More on the T-series

T-series requirements, quick answers

What are the requirements for ASE diesel certification on trucks?

Pass T2 Diesel Engines and document 2 years of hands-on work. Training can replace some or all of it; see work experience.

What is the passing score for the ASE T tests?

It is not published: ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed. The result is pass or fail.

How long does an ASE truck certification last?

5 years. The Renewal App is not for T tests, so every T test is renewed by a recertification test.

How soon can I retake a T test?

After 30 days, counted in full days, you can buy and schedule the same test again.
