Area by area
General engine diagnosis
The largest area: 14 scored questions. Tasks run from verifying the complaint through manifold vacuum, power balance, compression and cylinder leakage tests. It also takes in battery, starter and charging faults that show up as drivability or no-crank complaints.
Cylinder head & valve train
4 scored questions: head thickness and warpage, valves, guides, seats and springs, lifters and valve clearance, overhead cam endplay.
Engine block
4 scored questions: cylinder wall wear, bearing clearances, wear patterns that point to rod or main bore problems, ring gaps, timing chain and gears.
Lubrication & cooling
The smallest area at 3 scored questions: oil pressure tests, oil pump checks, thermostat, coolant service, fans and fan clutch.
Ignition system
6 scored questions: no-start, misfire and poor-mileage diagnosis, primary and secondary circuits, coils, ignition sensors and the control module.
Fuel, air induction & exhaust
6 scored questions: fuel trim and fuel pressure, pumps and their control circuits, electronic throttle, injectors, intake leaks and exhaust restriction.
Emissions control
5 scored questions: PCV, EGR, secondary air injection, the catalytic converter and EVAP, each from symptom to scan data.
Computerized engine controls
8 scored questions: OBD II enable criteria, data stream and freeze frame, diagnosis with and without codes, meter and scope readings, power and ground circuits, module replacement, and running every monitor to verify the repair.
Same content, separate certifications
T1 overlaps with the car tests, but the credentials don't transfer. A pass on A1 or A8 earns nothing toward T1, and T1 counts toward neither car nor truck Master. Each test is its own certification, renewed on its own.
