ASE A1 study guide for the 2026 test

Start with the free official guide. Its A1 section gives the question count for each area, 78 tasks and 10 sample questions with the answers marked. Then check the book or course you already own against it. Anything written before 2026 was built for a longer test with more weight on the head and the block, and a few of its chapters cover tasks that are gone.

  • 78tasks in the 2026 list
  • 45scored questions
  • 10sample questions in the free guide

Area by area: 2025 vs 2026

Checked Oct 23, 2026 against each source linked in the table. Question counts are scored questions as printed in each year's A1 test specification.

What to skip and what to keep

The 2026 task list keeps most of the old topics but changes the verb from measure to inspect and decide.

  • Gone: piston, pin and piston-ring measuring tasks and the valve spring installed-height check were dropped. In a pre-2026 book, skim those pages instead of drilling them.
  • Softened: measure cylinder bore, camshaft lift and crankshaft journal wear became inspect tasks; adjust valves became inspect valve lash/preload, adjust as needed.
  • New: Task B20, camshaft-driven pumps (fuel, coolant, vacuum): inspect, test, repair or replace.
  • Still there: Valve stem-to-guide clearance, bearing clearances, crankshaft end play and flywheel runout stay in the task list. Keep those pages.

The practical effect is a test about deciding what is wrong, not rebuilding to spec. A question that hands you a reading and asks for the cause is more likely than one that asks for a ring gap.

A study plan by question count

Spend your time in proportion to the questions, not to the length of the chapters. The task counts show why: the block area has the longest task list and the fewest questions.

  1. General engine diagnosis, 18 questions from 12 tasks. Learn to read vacuum, compression, power balance and leak-down results first: reading engine test results. Then noises, leaks and smoke: general engine diagnosis.
  2. Fuel, electrical, ignition, air induction and exhaust, 9 questions from 10 tasks: how a misfire, a lean condition or a boost leak shows up as an engine complaint (area page).
  3. Lubrication and cooling, 8 questions from 13 tasks: oil pressure diagnosis, overheating patterns, thermostats, electric pumps and fans (area page).
  4. Cylinder head and valve train, 6 questions from 20 tasks: warpage, valve and seat condition, lash, timing, VVT and torque-to-yield bolts (area page).
  5. Engine block, 4 questions from 23 tasks: bearing and piston wear patterns, end play, clearances (area page).

Finish with the full practice test under the 75 min clock, and go back to the area where you missed the most.

The 2026 split at a glance

Free and official material

  • The study guide (free PDF): ASE Automobile Study Guide 2026 has the A1 specification, the task list and 10 sample questions. The task list is the checklist: every question on the test is written to one or more of its tasks.
  • The official practice test (paid): ASE sells an official practice test of 25 questions, 60 days to finish it. Limits: English only, with one fixed set of questions per test.
  • Service information: the A1 asks you to check specifications and bulletins before deciding, so practice looking things up the way you would at work.

Third-party A1 books and their PDF copies are fine for theory, but check the edition year. If the A1 table inside does not total 45 scored questions, it predates the 2026 rewrite. The other ASE tests' guides are listed on the ASE study guide page.

A 2025 PDF looks almost the same

The 2025 guide still circulates online, and an old download is easy to mistake for the current one. Check the A1 page: the 2026 edition lists general engine diagnosis at 18 questions, the 2025 edition at 15.

Studying for the A1, quick answers

Is there a free ASE A1 study guide PDF?

Yes. ASE's own automobile study guide is a free PDF covering A1 to A9; the A1 part has the test specification, the task list and 10 sample questions with the answers marked. Make sure you download the 2026 edition: study guide PDF.

How should I study for the ASE A1?

By question count. General diagnosis has 18 of the 45 scored questions, so learn to interpret test results and symptoms first, then work the other areas in order of size. The plan is above.

How many questions do you need to get right to pass the A1?

That number isn't published: ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed. Aim to be solid in every area rather than chasing a percentage.

Is my 2025 A1 book still useful?

Mostly. The topics are similar, but the weights moved and some measuring tasks were dropped. Use the table above to see which chapters now matter less, and take your practice questions from 2026 material.
